Traditional Chinese Medicine in Maleny

History

Traditional Chinese Medicine (often referred to as TCM) dates back thousands of years and is a system of primary health care that includes acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and remedial massage (anmo tui Na). In Australia, the most popular forms of Chinese medicine are acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

The primary feature of Chinese medicine is that good health relies on the restoration and maintenance of harmony, balance and order to the individual. TCM takes a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as it does on the treatment.

Why is it different to the normal medical outlook:

When healthy, an abundant supply of Qi (pronounced chee) or ‘life energy’ flows through the body’s meridians (a network of unseen channels through the body). If the flow of Qi becomes blocked or there is an inadequate supply of Qi, the body fails to maintain harmony, balance and order and disease or illness follows. This can result from stress, overwork, poor diet, disease pathogens, environmental conditions and other lifestyle factors.. Qi flows through your body with your blood as well as along discreet pathways known as Acupuncture Meridians. According to Chinese Medicine, if you are ill in any way (physical, emotional or psychological) then this can be caused or lead to a blockage or stagnation in the flow of Qi in your body.

Chinese medicine focuses on the underlying condition as well as the treatment of the symptoms. Treatments work on the basis of individualised formulae for each patient.

The amount of Therapists in this field of alternative medicine is vast for this small town.

I have used this form of alternative medicine for most of my life and found that this form of holistic therapy is very strong. The aspect about this form of health treatment is that it looks at the body as a whole and treats the body to get it to heal itself. It is based on looking at where the body needs to have input by testing the pulse of the organs, looking at the tongue and other signs to see what the body is expressing and certainly not on the germ therapy that Western Medicine has. The Chinese had Emperors that had to be kept alive for as long as possible as they were considered semi God…and so the study of TCM was not only for Centuries before western Medicine but also the knowledge of all areas that have shallow study in Western Medicine (such as fertility etc) was well covered. So many cases of Chinese Medicine have cured cases that Western Medicine had given up on…simply due the lack of depth of knowledge as well as not treating the body as a whole organism.
