Activities In and Around Maleny:
Activities in and around Maleny are many and varied and there are so many activities in the Maleny area that guests always say that they need at least three days to see all that they want and all say that they want to come back to be able to see and do more.
Avid walkers come here for the Great Hinterland Walk. It can be done in two sections, The Kenilworth section has dry forest with pockets of rainforest and some steep hills. The Maleny, Montville, and Mapleton sections are beautiful with scenery, waterfalls, and a great track. One can come out and stay overnight in one of thousands of Hinterland places, explore and then go back. There are basic camp sites in Kondallia area. You can get guides for this by asking at the tourist centre. there are a ton of other walks around the area these can be seen on another blog.
Tours are available to see for example, cheese being made in the Cheese Factory. Maleny is very different from other country towns of its size. There are top quality galleries for every sort of art, photography, and woodwork.
It takes more than a few hours to do these places justice as they have an ethnic flavour due to the Hippy culture here. The IGA has to be visited even just to see its art on the roof, inside and outside. All of our guests say the food choices and layout is amazing. For those that want gluten-free, and organic choices it has whole isles dedicated to just these sorts of foods. The town has a famous cheese and icecream/gelato shop (winner of the best chocolate ice-cream in Australia) and a co-op with everything organic. The food in the cafes is what many people will travel from as far away as Brisbane to enjoy. The local food is great- healthy, and to survive it must be tasty due to the amount of competition here. We would say that the best coffee is at Shotgun(next to the Park across from Watson’s Garage uptown), Concept (on the board walk behind the Post Office) and Maple 3(first Cafe on left coming into town). Shotgun and Concept both serve food as well
Maleny Cheese Factory:
This is a must see attraction as it has won so many top awards in Australia for cheese and yogurt that they cover one whole wall. The cheese maker came from Switzerland and is at the top of his field. They have a taste test of so many cheeses that its its almost overwhelming. You can have a cheese platter, afternoon tea, lunch, fondue, or buy local drinks, chutneys etc.. The small cheese has a wax coating and we have had guests able to take them home to other States due to this. Some cheese is made from alternative milks such as goat and buffalo for those who are lactose intolerant. The herb, garlic Buffalo cheese is one of our favourites but there are so many choices, and everyone has their favourites. You can find the factory 150 metres past the Montville turn off on the main road into Maleny
This is not far from the house (4km). It has picnic facilities and is absolutely great for a swim, or visitors can choose from a number of walks. The scenery is stunning, and many people opt to go canoeing or fishing.
Secrets on the Lake:
This is next to the Baroon Dam on the other side. To get there you have to go almost to the town of Montville and then turn towards the Dam/National Park and travel until the road goes down to the Dam, about 3km along. The Resort has tree house accommodation but a visit to the main building is also a must. There you will be treated to the works of our local top wood artist. They also feature a cafe/restaurant with an incredible view.
Activities In and Around Maleny:
This is a German-style village and has all the shops and cafes a tourist could ever want. Our recommendation is to get to the cafes that are on the escarpment for the best view of the whole area.
- McCarthy’s Lookout: Located on 190/4 Mountain View Road. It features information on the Glasshouse mountains, and the view is of the Glasshouse Mountains in all their glory.
- Gerrard’s Lookout: This is on the main road to Montville and up on the escarpment with a view over the whole of the coast with an information board to show what’s where.
- Howell Knob lookout: This is on the Reesville Road half way down, and has a lookout over all the area.
- Mary Cairncross Lookout: this has a different view of the Glasshouse Mountains and is over the road from the Park, (until they finish building the huge new building so all can view from the top).
Maleny has a yoga building and regular classes located at the back of the Rainforest building, as well as many individuals that run classes in the area.
Health and Beauty:
Maleny has the highest ratio of health practitioners of any town in Australia. There are retreats for every cause, heaps of massage therapists, and every possible therapist for health. If you want beauty therapy, just across from the Post Office is a beauty hair treatment shop, and there are plenty of hairdressers around the town.
The drive across the top of the range is a must for views on both sides. Baroon on one side, the coast on the other; it’s hard to keep your eyes on the road! the views driving out around Curramore- further on than Witta along the back of this range are also spectacular. The drive along Mountain View road is highly regarded not just for its views but also for the the sunsets over Maleny. People say its like a piece of Europe here due to the trees, greenery, hills, etc.
You will need 2 to 3 days to do this Zoo justice as it is a world class Zoo. Maleny Wildlife Holiday House has a discount of 10% off the entry for guests and for a group this can be a big saving. Updates are available on our blog as to what’s new at the Zoo.
Maleny has become very popular for events. The big ones are the wood festival, the foods festival, the music festival (in winter) and the Woodford Music Festival is over the Christmas/New Year Period. Please check our blog for updates on the latest happenings in the Maleny area
Maleny has become the Wedding Capital of Australia. We have people coming into the Maleny Manor by Helicopter or to Tiffiny’s by limousine, or on a motor bike to Spicers; there are 20 different official wedding venues in the local area. Many wedding guests choose the Maleny Wildlife Holiday House due to its 8 beds and proximity to these popular wedding venues.
This can be done on a guided walk or on your own throughout the many Park in the area, or even from the house as there are plenty of birds in the surrounding forest. Formally, it can be done from the bird Sanctuary at the Botanical Gardens.
Each week on a Sunday, Maleny has an open market,(food and art/crafts) Monville has a market once a month, Crystal Waters also has their market once a month- on the first Saturday, and Witta also has their market once a month. These last ones are Farmers Markets and have local produce and products.
Platypus and wildlife watching:
This can be done from the causeway just down from the house early in the mornings.
The Holiday House has a whole shelf of brochures and folders full of information on all that one can see and do in and around Maleny.
